A Frequency-domain Compensation Scheme for IQ-Imbalance in OFDM Receivers

چکیده
A special pilot pattern across two OFDM symbols is devised for channel estimation in OFDM systems with IQ imbalance at receiver. Based on this pilot pattern, a high-efficiency time-domain (TD) least square (LS) channel estimator is proposed to suppress channel noise by a factor of N/(L+1) in comparison with the frequency-domain LS one in [1] where N and L+1 are the total number of subcarriers and the length of cyclic prefix, respectively. Following this, a low-complexity frequency-domain (FD) Gaussian elimination (GE) equalizer is proposed to eliminate IQ distortion by using only 2N complex multiplications per OFDM symbol. From simulation, the proposed TD-LS/FD-GE scheme using only two pilot OFDM symbols achieves the same bit error rate ( BER) performance under ideal channel knowledge and no IQ imbalances at low and medium signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions whereas these compensation schemes including FD-LS/Post-FFT LS, FD-LS/Pre-FFT Corr, and SPP/Pre-FFT Corr in [1] require about twenty OFDM training symbols to reach the same performance where A/B denotes compensation scheme with A being channel estimator and B being equalizer.

Compensation of IQ imbalance in OFDM systems
Today a lot of attention is spent on developing inexpensive OFDM receivers. Especially, zero-IF receivers are very appealing, because they avoid costly IF filters. However, this implies IQ demodulation at RF, which therefore cannot be done digitally and thus introduces IQ mismatch. Unfortunately, OFDM is very sensitive to receiver IQ imbalance. Therefore, we developed a new compensation scheme ...
متن کاملIQ Imbalance Compensation Scheme for MB-OFDM Using Transmission Diversity
Currently, multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is considered to be one of the modulation schemes of UWB and is being actively investigated. It is necessary to provide lowcost receivers for consumers to receive wide support for the MB-OFDM system. Such receivers can be achieved by utilizing direct-conversion architecture. Direct-conversion architecture suffers from IQ ...
متن کاملJoint compensation of IQ imbalance and frequency offset in OFDM systems
Zero-IF receivers are gaining interest because they enable low-cost WLAN OFDM terminals. However, Zero-IF receivers introduce IQ imbalance which may have a huge impact on the performance. Rather than increasing component cost to decrease the IQ imbalance, an alternative is to tolerate the IQ imbalance and compensate it digitally. Current solutions converge too slow for bursty WLAN communication...

Abstarct In this paper, combination of channel, receiver frequency-dependent IQ imbalance and carrier frequency offset estimation under short cyclic prefix (CP) length are considered in OFDM system. An adaptive algorithm based on the set-membership filtering (SMF) algorithm is used to compensate for these impairments. In short CP length, per-tone equalization (PTEQ) structure is used to avoid i...
متن کاملIQ Imbalance Estimation Scheme in the Presence of DC Offset and Frequency Offset in the Frequency Domain
Direct conversion receivers in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems suffer from direct current (DC) offset, frequency offset, and IQ imbalance. We have proposed an IQ imbalance estimation scheme in the presence of DC offset and frequency offset, which uses preamble signals in the time domain. In this scheme, the DC offset is eliminated by a differential filter. However, the...
